It seems there is a lot of debate recently about this doctrinal belief. Yes, to be certain, we need to believe that Jesus is the Son of God and to receive salvation by the atonement with His Blood. This saves our soul from certain death but there are qualifiers which will determine WHERE the soul goes after leaving the body.
In the computer programming world, these are termed “conditions”. The IF, THEN or ELSE statements made to meet certain conditions before proceeding with the next step in execution of the program.
We find this pattern quite clearly laid out in the Torah and the words by which God gives us the choice of LIFE or DEATH. If you want to see for yourself, just begin reading with the mindset of looking for IF, THEN or ELSE statements. You’ll find many.
There are various schools of thought with regard to Once Saved, Always Saved. Many believe that this means that it doesn’t matter if we sin after we’re saved, we’re saved either way. Others believe that this comes with conditions of repentance needed for any new sinning in our lives. The latter is more in line with scripture as we will show in this breakout.
Clearly, we sin daily whether we mean to or not. We are subject to sinning even well after we receive salvation. The question is one of a moral and complete understanding of the consequences of our acts, words and thoughts.
How can we possibly believe that if we continue in our sins after being saved, without repenting of said infractions, that God will be okay with that?
First, we have to know what God expects of us and to do that we need to study the Torah, the first five books. Most in Christianity are taught that the “Old Testament” does not apply to us, that it is for the Jews. This is a big whopper lie of satan. And no….I’m not going to capitalize the name given to the adversary.
So, the first step to really grasping the concept of salvation is to get to know God. I mean REALLY KNOW Him. In my own growth as a Christian, through babyhood, being on the milk, I really had no clue. God, even His Son Jesus was very abstract to me, distant, up in the sky somewhere. It wasn’t until about 15 years of infancy that I began to take baby steps and walk and grow. The growing began with reading AND studying the Torah. Everything you need to know about who God is, can be found there.
Php 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
If OSAS means it doesn’t matter, then WHY would Paul say this? What is there to work out if we are already saved?
We can find many verses that address salvation and some seem ambiguous in wording, enough so as to be left to our own interpretation and questions then remain and this is most likely why there is division about the topic.
In the Book of Hebrews we find clarity:
Heb 10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
Heb 10:27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversary (those in opposition, meaning disobedience; rebellious ones).
For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth.
The key OPERATIVE word is WILLFULLY.
We find a very good, very clear example of WILLFULL SINNING in scripture:
Act 5:1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
Act 5:2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
Act 5:3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
Act 5:4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
Act 5:5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.
Act 5:6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.
Act 5:7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.
Act 5:8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.
Act 5:9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.
Act 5:10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.
Heb 10:29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
Heb 10:30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.
Heb 10:31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
If we continue in ANY sins after receiving salvation, we are indeed subject to a much sorer punishment for treading underfoot the Son of God and made his blood unholy.
Sinning willfully after receiving Jesus is a greater sin than if we sinned and never received Jesus.
Both sinners are wrong but the one who was saved is in greater danger of hell and damnation and is blight on the integrity of other believers and followers who do not sin willfully. We are given a bad name by those who do.
But should we judge? No, we should pray for their souls before it’s too late.
